Aluminum Extrusion Design Competition 2025

Hydroponics is a soil-free method of growing plants using nutrient-rich water, enabling faster growth and efficient use of space and resources.

Hydroponics was chosen for its minimal root growth, space efficiency, and reduced risk of clogging, offering a cleaner and more manageable system.

This system consists of 5 main parts - the components housing, main shelves, top light, and side rails - all interlocking to form a complete, functional unit, where each part is essential to the whole.

The main shelf is made from aluminum extrusion with drilled holes for water flow. A rubber gasket on each side ensures the system is watertight. An extruded aluminum lid with punched holes holds plants, while a wooden plank adds aesthetics, and acrylic diffuses LED light. Two LED strips adhere to the aluminum, which helps to dissipate heat. A slot manages wiring, and three screw bosses attach the shelf to the side rails.

Each side rail has a drilled hole for every shelf, aligning the main water chamber in the shelves to the outgoing water flow tube integrated into the aluminum extrusion. Same follows for the outgoing water and electrical.

The component housing is divided into two sections: one for water storage and the other for electronic. A removable top plate allows easy installation of the water pump. While a screwed-in back plate provides access to the air pump and PCB. The system begins with the air pump oxygenating the water, which the water pump then circulates through the side rails into the main shelves. Overflow holes maintain the water level before the water returns to the main chamber. The PCB controls the pumps and connects to the power cord.

Sylvani is assembled by screwing the main shelves to the side rails with a rubber gasket in between to hold water. The top light also attaches to the side rails but without a gasket. The side rails sit on the component housing, connected by a screwed-in plate. A wooden plank, glued to the aluminum, hides the screws and adds aesthetic appeal.
